Obituary — Carver Fouks, 78
Career in education spanned 40 years

During nearly four decades in education, Carver Fouks was a teacher, coach, athletics director and administrator at high schools in the east metro and western Wisconsin.

Fouks, of Stillwater, died of heart complications Oct. 12 at Regions Hospital, where he recently had heart surgery. He was 78.

Fouks grew up in Deer Park, Wis., and graduated from Clayton High School, where he excelled in basketball. After two years in the U.S. Navy, he enrolled at River Falls State Teachers College in River Falls, Wis., and earned a bachelor of science degree.

His extensive career in education began in 1952 at Logan High School in La Crosse, Wis., where he taught math and coached basketball for a year before joining Hudson High School. During the next 12 years, Fouks taught algebra, coached basketball and football and supervised a physical education program.

"He was always busy, but he was the type to handle it," said his wife, Eunice, who married Fouks in 1951.

In 1965, Fouks was hired as a driver's education instructor and head football coach at Stillwater High School. "He had a very good reputation as a coach," his wife said.

He later became athletics director at Stillwater High and, after receiving a master's degree in education at the University of Minnesota, served as its assistant principal.

In 1974, Fouks became principal at Oak-Land Junior High School in Lake Elmo — a position he took so he could work with younger students, his wife said.

Fouks was principal at South St. Paul High School for only a year, but helped institute parent conferences, a parent advisory group, staff and parent newsletters and an in-school suspension program, said his daughter, Lauren Schneider, of Hudson.

Fouks was principal at Park High School in Cottage Grove from 1976 to 1979 before taking the same position at North High School in North St. Paul in 1980. He retired in 1991.

Betsy Senrick, a former English teacher at North, said Fouks was a "kind and friendly man" who encouraged faculty and students to take pride in their school.

"When he was hired, I think we were seen by some people as the older school," said Senrick, who added that, at the time, Tartan High School had just opened in neighboring Oakdale and many teachers transferred there.

"So I think it was important that Carver always pushed and supported 'Polar Pride,' " she said.

Fouks was popular with students and teachers because of his "even-mannered" approach and interest and background in sports, said Bruce Beck, a former board member for the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District.

"He had great rapport with people and was very approachable," Beck said. "He was very well-liked."

Fouks had been a member of the choir at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Stillwater for 37 years and also taught AARP driver safety courses in the St. Croix Valley.

Services were Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, Eunice, and daughter Lauren, Fouks is survived by sons Greg, of North Oaks, and Brad, of Denver; daughters Sheri Harris, of Shoreview, and Kristine Petersen, of Stillwater; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sisters Betty Miller, of Dresser, Wis., and Jeanne Millbauer, of Apple Valley.
