Gene Marshall Swelland Jurisch

Gene Marshall Swelland Jurisch, 59, adopted son of Louis and Nettie Jurisch, died Thursday, January 14, 1982, at Apple River Valley Memorial Hospital in Amery.

He was born to Henry and Bertha Swelland on April 5, 1922 at Brainerd, Minn. His father died in April of 1923 and he and his sister, Hazel, were adopted in March 1927 by Louis and Nettie Jurisch. He grew up and went to school in Wisconsin, living in the Little Falls, New Richmond, and Deer Park areas.

Gene was inducted into the U.S. Army on August 21, 1942 and served in World War II, fighting with the Combat Engineers Corps. He was taken a prisoner of war by the Germans in January 1945 and released in May. He was honorably discharged from the service in August of the same year.

On June 14, 1946 he married Florence Fouks of Deer Park. They had eight children, Roland of Pasadena, Calif.; Ronald of Champlin, Minn.; Donald of Emerald, Wis.; David of Deer Park; Carol (Mrs. Bruce) Dale of Amery; Carl of Deer Park; Dean of River Falls; and Melissa at home. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Florence of Deer Park and his children and grandchildren, he is survived by his sisters, Hazel Showalter of Egan, Minn. and Esther Bruns of Burnsville, Minn. and brothers, Henry of Victorville, Calif.; Laurence of Bagley, Minn.; Orville of Grand Rapids, Minn.; Theodore of Minneapolis and Hegbert of Apple Valley, Minn., as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was January 17 at Hammer Funeral Home in Clear Lake.

Funeral services were Monday, January 18 at 2 PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Deer Park with Rev. Mark Broecker officiating. Mrs. Jerol Johnson, organist, accompanied Mrs. George Pankonien, soloist, with "Softly and Tenderly", "The Old Rugged Cross", and "Abide with Me".

Casketbearers were Floyd Fouks, Alfred Krig, Al Broberg, Al Kuhn, Bob Peterson and Aaron Palewicz.

Military rites were conducted by members of Erick Vick Post of the American Legion from Deer Park.

Spring interment will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Forest.

The Hammer Funeral Home of Clear Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
