T. A. MALUM MORE THAN 50 YEARS MERCHANT IN DEER PARK,
ALSO MUSICIAN OF HIGH ORDER

DEER PARK -- Thomas August Malum, who passed away at his home here May 2, was born on the Christ Torgerson farm in the town of Cylon Feb. 11, 1862. As an infant of only 6 months, his mother passed away and he was raised by Mrs. Malena Torgerson, who loved him as her own boy, and brought him up in the fear of God. As a young man of 22, he was married to Hannah Serine Halvorson, April 12, 1884, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Danielson. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Deer Park where Mr. Malum opened a general store and operated the same for more than 50 years.

During the time of his youth and early manhood he developed his musical talents and became the organist and choir leader in the Methodist church. This position he held for many years. Later he served as organist of the Emanuel Lutheran church of Blackbrook. He also organized several bands, in which participated players from Cylon, Deer Park and Blackbrook.

When Mrs. Malum's sister, Mrs. John Unseth, died in Ashland about 46 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Malum welcomed into their home and raised as their own Mr. and Mrs. Unseth's 3 little children, Nora, Clara and Arthur. Nora and Clara's married names are: Mrs. Willard Johnson and Mrs. Carl Lee.

Mr. Malum's brother, Frank, of Atlanta, Ga., and his only sister, Mrs. Clara Reynolds, Sioux City, preceded him in death.

The funeral was held from the ME church May 5, Rev. O. H. Steen officiating with W. W. Beebe in charge of arrangements. During the service Mrs. O. H. Steen and Miss Ruth Thompson sang 2 songs.

The funeral was largely attended, the following out of town relatives were present:

Mr. and Mrs. Willard Johnson and their daughter, Martha, and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Endham, (Lucille Johnson), Rice Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Unseth, Drummond; Mrs. Carl Lee, Mason; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Halvorson, Knapp; Mr. and Mrs. Christ Halvorson, Margaret Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Halvorson, Mrs. Carl Halberg, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Walby, Hudson.

DEER PARK -- Thos. A. Malum, 52 years a resident of this village, died Sunday at his home in his 76th year.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2:15 from the house and 2:30 from the ME church, Rev. Otto H. Steen officiating. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery, W. W. Beebe, New Richmond, having the arrangements in charge.

Mr. Malum was born in the town of Cylon. He was married 52 years ago to Hannah Halvorson, who survives. They had no children. The decedent was in business here 49 years, retiring 3 years ago.
