Vernon Setter, age 93, of Amery, died May 11, 2006 at the Golden Age Manor in Amery after a brief illness.

Vernon was born on February 14, 1913 in Deer Park to Paul and Nettie (Elden) Setter, the tenth child in a family of twelve. He attended Lakeside School and graduated from New Richmond High School where he played football and sang in the octette. He worked on the family farm and for other farmers and also worked at the Strand Ski factory until called for service in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in France and Germany attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart. On his return, he married Ariel Le Page of St. Croix Falls and they purchased a farm northwest of Deer Park where they lived and retired. He enjoyed dairy farming and was chosen by the Amery FFA as Farmer of the Year in 1961. He held offices in Farm Bureau, N.W. Farm Business and Record Service, the American Legion and the Deer Park United Methodist Church where he was a faithful member all of his life. The couple had no children but were nevertheless involved in 4-H, Sunday school and in teaching visiting nieces and nephews about farm life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, setting up bluebird trails, growing apples, raspberries and elderberries and doing woodworking, restoring his old John Deere tractor, singing in the choir and taking part in Norwegian traditions. He and his wife traveled extensively, camping in most of the states and provinces attending elderhostels and joining tour groups for overseas adventures.

He is preceded in death by sisters Agnes Setter, Mae Knerr, Margaret Grossman and brothers Prescott, Nels, Lincoln, Lloyd and Wallace and Ray.

He is survived by his wife Ariel, sister Nette (Al) Lundeen of Fargo and brother Russell (Edith) of Deer Park as well as a special nephew Tom Lundeen of Waco who spent many summers on the farm and special nephew Wayne Setter of Deer Park who now owns and operates the farm.

Interment of cremains is at Calvary Cemetery in Deer Park with funeral arrangements made by the Williamson Funeral Home in Amery.
