Later on he was employed by Northern States Power Company in Amery as a service tech for 26 years. He was in the U.S. Army with active duty in the Berlin Airlift and remained in the National Guard for decades serving in the New Richmond unit.

On November 4, 1958 he was united in marriage to Ruth L. Warner. To this union four sons were born, Arlyn (Denise) Severson, Greg (Kris) Severson, Dan (Missy) Severson and John (Jewel) Severson.
