GLADYS M. SPANGBERG
October 1, 1915 - December 27, 2006

Gladys M. Spangberg, age 91 of Amery, Wis., died on Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at the Willow Ridge Care Center in Amery.

Gladys Marie Spangberg was born on October 1, 1915, in Lincoln Township, Polk County, Wis., the daughter of Axel and Anna (Sorenson) Spangberg. She was baptized at Balsam Lutheran Church in rural Amery and later moved with her family to the Clear Lake area when she was a child. Gladys attended Edgewood School and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. She graduated from Clear Lake High School and went on to receive a bachelors degree at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in elementary education.

Gladys began teaching at the country schools around Clear Lake, including Edgewood and Green Creek. She returned to college and earned a Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota.

In 1958, Gladys moved to New Richmond and began teaching fourth grade at New Richmond Elementary School. While she lived in New Richmond, Gladys was a member of the First Lutheran Church there. She taught in New Richmond until her retirement in 1975.

Gladys moved to Evergreen Village in Amery in 1990. During her retirement, she kept active playing in several bridge groups, selling Avon and collecting buttons. Gladys was a member of the Wisconsin State Button Collector's Society, and had quite an extensive collection of decorative buttons. She also enjoyed quilting and traveling, making several trips to Scandinavia. Gladys was also an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Amery. She has been a resident of the Willow Ridge Care Center since 2004.

Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Axel Spangberg; sisters, Esther Wahl and Louise Sorenson; infant sister, Edna Spangberg; niece and nephew, David and Evelyn Sorenson.

She's survived by: nieces Arlene (Dean) Genson, Springbrook, Wis., Barbara Sorenson, Deer Park, Wis., Marla Sorenson, Deer Park, Wis.; great nieces and nephews Erin and Cory Sanko, Ingrid and Clint Sutherland, Patrick and Wendy Genson, Britta and Cameron Cummins, Jesse and Penny Genson; and great-great nephew Grey Sutherland.

There will be a memorial service for Gladys Spangberg in the spring at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Amery. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Scheuermann-Hammer Funeral Home in Clear Lake is handling the arrangements.
