Brady Howard Utgaard

BRADY UTGAARD, PIONEER RESIDENT OF STAR PRAIRIE PASSED AWAY FRIDAY (1951)

Brady Howard Utgaard slept quietly away at the home of his daughter, Lucille, (Mrs. Lester Giese) at 4 o'clock on the morning of December 15, after a lingering illness of more than a year.

Mr. Utgaard was born at Rendalen, Norway, on November 21, 1872, the son of Peder and Bertha Utgaard. He came to America at the age of 12 and spent his youth in the town of Cylon. Becoming interested in the creamery business he enrolled at St. Paul Park college and graduated with a buttermaker's degree from the university of Minnesota.

On July 20, 1895 he was united in marriage to Caroline Marie Christianson in the Methodist church at Eau Claire, Wis. She preceded him in death on August 24, 1941. To them were born 11 children, seven sons and four daughters, Alfred, who passed away on March 17, 1947; Dewey of Stanwood, Washington; Bert of Star Prairie; Margaret (Mrs. Ted Anderson), of Seattle, Washington; Charles, of Portland, Oredgon; John, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Bertha (Mrs. Helmer Johnson), of New Richmond; Clifford, of Portland, Ore.; Stanley, Star Prairie; Olive (Mrs. Clarence Polfus), of New Richmond, and Lucille (Mrs. Lester Giese) of Star Prairie. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

After his marriage he settled in the village of Deer Park where he operated the Deer Park creamery. It was here that he became interested in poultry as a side line. In 1900 he sold his interests in Deer Park and moved to Colfax where he operated a creamery untill the fall of the year when he moved to Star Prairie, where he has resided ever since. Upon his settling in Star Prairie he operated the creamery both here and at New Richmond for the Superior Creamery Co., and in this connection he also operated a cream weighing station at Horse Creek. However his interest for poultry soon found him again raising them as a side line. As his poultry business grew, he severed his connection with the creamery and devoted all his time to the hatching and raising of poultry. In 1945 he was honored by the Wisconsin Poultry Improvement Association for the outstanding work he had done in this field.

Funeral services were held from his home at Star Prairie at 1:30 and from Bethany Lutheran church at 2:00 on Monday, December 18. (1951) Mr. Utgaard was a faithful member of the Methodist church at Deer Park, and his pastor, the Rev. Virgil Brown officiated at the service, assisted by Rev. W. M. Abramson. Interment was at the Calvary cemetery in Deer Park.

Casket bearers were William Olson, Harry Irle, Arnold Bottolfson, Goodwin Albertson, David Carlson and Edwin Larson. Beebe Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
