Sex offender makes court appearance
(3/14/02)

March 14, 2002 - A New Richmond man is scheduled to appear before a St. Croix County judge later this month on a charge that he failed to register himself as a sex offender when he moved to the Deer Park area this past December.

Police issued a warrant last month for the arrest of Michael Aaron Stevens, 51, also known as Michael Edward May. Officials said the warrant was later rescinded after Stevens made an initial court appearance and posted a $10,000 signature bond. Court records indicate Stevens changed his middle and last names in February. Officials said he also uses the name Kirk Darcy Anderson from time to time.

According to the criminal complaint, Stevens was convicted of sexual assault of a child in Adams County, Col. in March of 1975. Because of that conviction, officials said he is required to register himself as a sex offender wherever he takes up residence.

Wisconsin officials said Stevens moved into a Deer Park apartment this past December, but failed to register himself with the proper authorities. Reports state Stevens moved to New Richmond last week and now lists the Lowrey Hotel as his primary address, but still maintains a P.O. Box in Deer Park.

Stevens is charged with misdemeanor failure to provide sex offender information in St. Croix County. Oklahoma officials convicted Stevens of failing to register himself in their state in August of 2000. At press time, officials with the New Richmond Police Department said Stevens had not yet registered himself with them after relocating to the city. If convicted on the new charge, Stevens could face up to nine months in jail and a maximum fine of $10,000. He is scheduled to make another court appearance in the case March 28 at 1:30 p.m. The proceedings are being held before Judge Eric Lundell.
