Hazel Evelyn Olson, age 98, of New Richmond and formerly of Deer Park, passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at New Richmond Meadows.
Hazel was born June 24, 1908 to Ole and Caroline (Asp) Asp, on the family farm homesteaded by her grandparents who came from Sweden. After her marriage to Eddie Norman Olson on November 20, 1926, she resided in the village of Deer Park.
Hazel and Eddie were both active in the community and Trinity United Methodist in Deer Park. Hazel was active in church women's groups, Ladies Aid, and also served on the church board and sang in the choir for many years.
She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a life member of the Eastern Star Loyal Chapter 67 of Star Prairie. She received her 75 year pin in 2005.
Hazel and Eddie moved to New Richmond in 1975 where they became active in the New Richmond United Methodist Church and made many new friends along the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Eddie in 1985; one grandson, Randy; four sisters, Mable, May, Blanche and Minnie; and three brothers, Walter, Herbert and Albert.
In spite of advancing years and disabilities, Hazel kept a positive outlook. Her deep Christian faith was a big part of who she was. Her apartment was spotless, her food delicious and her appearance immaculate. When the time came for the nursing home decision, Hazel made it. There she continued to make friends and take part in the activities. She had a remarkable memory and enjoyed people and she was a joy to be near.
Hazel is survived by her son, Arvaal Olson of West Fargo, N.D.; daughter, Ardis Olufson of Chanhassen, Minn.; foster daughter, Dorie (Gary) Solum of Turtle Lake; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Leslie Olufson of St. Louis Park, Minn.
Visitation was held for one hour prior to Monday's service.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Deer Park with Reverend Terri Koca officiating. Organist was Joyce Petersen and vocalist was Warren Shortess.
An Eastern Star service was conducted by members of Loyal Chapter #67 EOS of Star Prairie.
Casketbearers were Tom Gaffney, Jason Brown, Eric Solum, Mark Olufson, Andrew Olufson, Warren Shortess, Curtis Olufson, Martin Olufson and Mark Stickler. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery in Deer Park. Arrangements by Beebe Mortuary.
