Elaine K. Sawyer, 83, of Eau Claire, formerly of Somerset, died early Monday, February 28 at the home of her daughter in Rice Lake after being diagnosed with cancer recently.
Elaine Katherine Sawyer was born March 17, 1921 in Ely, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Maria (Tuominiemi) Filson. She grew up in Ely and graduated from Memorial High School there in 1939. On April 18, 1948 Elaine was married to Frank Sawyer in Hudson.
Over the next ten years they lived in Madison, Deer Park, and finally settled in Somerset in 1958. Elaine and Frank also raised seven children, Darrell, Robert, Gary, Candace, Cheryl, Terry and Janine. In addition to raising her family, Elaine worked as a housekeeper for many years. In her spare time, Elaine enjoyed baking, crafts and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Sawyer; her parents, Henry and Maria Filson; and 10 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Darrell (Carolyn) Schroeder, Washington, Utah, Robert (Ann) Sawyer, Moose Lake, Minn., Gary Sawyer, Maplewood, Minn., Candace Duncan, Menomonie, Cheryl Gathman, Altoona, Terry Dulle, Rice Lake, Janine Sawyer, Rice Lake; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene (Marge) Filson, Los Altos, Calif.; sister, Gertrude Stukel, Ely; many relatives, family and friends.
A memorial service for Elaine Sawyer will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4 at Scheuermann-Hammer Funeral Home, Clear Lake, with visitation one hour before the service at the funeral home.
