Saint Croix Falls Man Killed in Crash With Semi

A 77-year-old St. Croix Falls man was killed Thursday evening in a crash with a semi on State Highway 46, east of New Richmond. According to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s office, Laverne Dietmeier was driving a late-model pickup while pulling a cattle trailer northbound at around 6:42 pm Thursday on highway 46 when he collided with the trailer of a semi-rig that the driver was backing up into his home driveway. Dietmeier apparently did not see the rig that was blocking his lane. The semi was being driven by 49-year-old Mark A. Salmon of New Richmond, and he lived at the location of the crash. The crash occurred about three-tenths of a mile north of the junction with State Highway 64, in rural New Richmond, in the Town of Cylon. Authorities have not said if Dietmeier died on the scene, or whether he was taken to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. The highway was closed for some time while authorities investigated the crash. The death was the 12th of 2006 in St. Croix County roadways.
