Firefighters from Deer Park and Amery knock down the last of flames that destroyed a barn on a town of Alden farm Saturday afternoon.

TOWN OF ALDEN -- A family's barn burned to the ground Saturday, November 30, afternoon in a fire battled by members of two area fire departments.

The barn, located on the David Carr farm at 1354 Hwy. A in Polk County, could be seen from as far away as St. Croix County Hwy E, 15 miles to the south.

Deer Park Fire Department was first on the scene at about 1:45 Saturday afternoon. By the time firefighters arrived, most of the Carr family's barn had been engulfed by flames.

Fire Chief Duane Krueger made a second call for backup to Amery Fire Department, which dispatched three additional units.

In all about 25 firefighters worked to put out the blaze which was fanned by high winds. The 911 call came into Deer Park around 1:30 and volunteers scrambled to the emergency.

The cause of the fire was unknown, but Carr said he had been sharpening a lawn mower blade on a grinder out in the barn before going into the house for a few minutes. When Carr noticed flames leaping out of the building he, his wife and family rushed out to pull as much of their personal possessions out of the blaze as they could.

Just hours before, their two horses had been in the barn taking shelter from the chilling winds. Most of what was lost in the blaze included power tools, trailers, horse equipment, and a winter's worth of hay for the horses.

The Carrs have lived at their address since 1993.
