Local skiers compete in Birkebeiner

There were a number of local athletes who competed in the 2006 American Birkebeiner cross country skiing event in Cable Feb. 23-25.

The local contingent was led by the Remington family of New Richmond.

Jim Remington is the leader of the Remington ski clan and has completed 14 Birkies. This year he had to sit out the race because of a back injury.

The Remington children all competed in the event. John is the veteran among the siblings. He competed in his sixth Birkie, finishing in 3:33.36. Tom was taking part in his second Birkie and finished the race in 3:41.10.

Brian and Christine Remington competed for the first time, in the Kortelopet race. The Birkebeiner race covers 51 kilometers and the Kortelopet covers 23 kilometers. Brian finished the Kortelopet in 1:49.32 and Christine completed her race in 2:31.46.
