The Lorain Fire Department is the latest in the area to cash in on over 18-million dollars of federal grants that have been awarded to Wisconsin fire departments in the past year. The federal government has dished out the grant money through FEMA's assistance to Firefighters grant program. A number of area departments have received money through the program. Lorain's department was notified last week it will receive $135,000 dollars to purchase a new fire truck. Other area departments that have received money in this years round of grants include: 65-thousand to Barron-Maple Grove, 112 thousand to Bruce Fire, 35-thousand to Clear Lake. Deer Park Fire received 74 thousand dollars, Osceola fire got 10-thousand, Prescott fire got 47 thousand dollars, Spooner fire department received 81-thousand dollars, Spring Valley was awarded 28-thousand, United Fire District in Baldwin got 74-thousand dollars, another 50-thousand dollars went to the Webster Fire Department. The departments must still come up with 10 percent matching funds to receive the grants. Congress has funded the grant program for another year, and area departments are expected to begin applying for 2004 grant money in March.
