Homocide Suspect

New Richmond police officers apprehended a homicide suspect at a busy downtown intersection late last Friday morning. Taken into custody was a former New Richmond resident Mark Anthony Spalding, 42, who is wanted in Colorado for the June 26 death of a Twin Cities man, who was traveling through the state with Spalding at the time of the incident. The arrest took place during a routine traffic stop at the intersection of South Knowles Avenue and First Street. New Richmond police officer Mike Kastens made the traffic stop. Spalding, who has also listed addresses in Deer Park and the Twin Cities, is facing one count of vehicular homicide in Cedar Creek County Colorado in connection with the death of Paul Mehrkens, 46. Reports say that Mehrkens was a passenger in a truck driven by Spalding on June 21. The truck as pulling a cargo trailer. According to the Colorado criminal complaint, Spalding was traveling at a high rate of speed when the cargo trailer began to swerve causing both the truck and the trailer to leave the roadway and travel over the guard rail. Both men were ejected from the vehicle.
