Glenwood City firefighters rush toward leaping flames at this town Emerald Barn Fireof Emerald barn fire Monday afternoon.

Fire departments from Deer Park and Glenwood City were called to Emerald Township Monday afternoon after a rubbish fire grew out of control.

Fire fighters were called to the scene around 2 p.m. The fire began at a piece of property owned by Norman Logterman, 2330 County Road G. When they reached the scene, fire fighters found the east end of a barn on the property engulfed in flames. Before tankers could reach the scene from Deer Park and Glenwood City, the fire began to work its way toward the west. Fire fighters at first tried to douse the flames, but when it became apparent that the barn would soon be fully engulfed, they turned their attention to a nearby aluminum outbuilding, wetting down the roof and walls to prevent them from buckling.

Flames eventually climbed 40 to 50 feet in the air and a huge column of black smoke climbed into the sky. The smoke was visible as far west as Hwy. 65 just south of New Richmond, a distance of about 10 miles. The heat from the flames was so intense that it could be felt along Hwy G at the other end of a 200-yard driveway that led to the scene of the fire.

Fire fighters were unable to save the barn, which was declared a total loss. Though there was no livestock in the barn at the time of the fire, there was some hay in the building. Fire fighters say the fire apparently began when Dave Waldroff, who is in negotiations to buy the property from Logterman, began burning a demolished shed that once stood near the barn. Sparks from the burning pile eventually caught the barn on fire. Fire fighters were unsure of the value of the property loss.

Deer Park firefighters were called to the scene of a Cylon (township) brush fire. The controlled burn got out of hand in the 2200 block of 210th Avenue.

Deer Park firefighters put out the blaze before it did substantial damage, but the fire did work its way up a power pole and got close to the high tension wires before firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.
