DEER PARK LIBRARY
HISTORY PROJECT UPDATE
January 23, 2007

At the start of the year 2007, our History Project is looking as if our time has been well spent, thanks to the work of many.

The GENEALOGY FILE has over 500 folders with some having much family information and some having very little. We have had several requests for information over the last year. Fortunately for most of them, we have had some information to send them. We are very appreciative of the information these people have sent us back so we can enlarge our files on these families.

Our LOCAL HISTORY file is a work in progress as we search for facts about the various places of business, churches, school, news items of happenings, social clubs and all the things that made up small community life over the passage of time.

Over the next year we will be trying to finish up the history of our list of churches and cemetery directories of the area around Deer Park. We are collecting all the platbooks we can in an effort to help people in trying to find where someone lived at some point in time. We start with 1876 and go from there. We are collecting any platbooks from the surrounding counties too.

Phyliss Luhman and Nole Cook have taken pictures of Old Barns around the area and are putting them and the history about each one in a notebook for use in the History section of the Library. We are appreciative of the work they have put into this project.

People have donated Deer Park Mementoes which we display in the display case. Under the display case we have old school books, history books by various area people and other assorted old items. All items in the History section cannot be checked out but can be copied. This includes old pictures, etc. When you are in the library feel free to look at what is there and if you wish to sit at the desk and read..........that is what the desk is there for. We hope that we can be of help to you and we are very grateful to the librarians and other people who help us.

About the History Corner. . .

In the corner you'll find a display area that changes quarterly.

The display cabinet, with locking glass doors, was donated by the HCE (Deer Park Homemakers), Erik Vic Post, and individuals. We have had displays from the past including: holidays, glassware, school items, and toys.

Our file cabinet contains family genealogies as well as history of the area. These materials may be used at the library only. If you'd like to make a copy to take with you, the Library has a copy machine. If you need help making copies, a librarian will glady assist you.

Our small committee is a non-profit group that has 2 annual fund raisers to finance our efforts. In May we have a Plant Sale and in November we have a Bake Sale.

The Deer Park History Committee would like you to know...

...that we are looking for items that reflect Deer Park history, like giveaways from the businesses. If you have anything to donate or loan for a time, contact the committee through the library.

...they will be in the Community Center on Memorial Day with a display of their work. Stop and say hello.

...when you are doing cleaning and sorting, if you should come across anything you think might be of interest to the History Project, please call and describe your find as they are looking for family history as well as area history.

If you have information or items you would like to share with us; OR if we can help you find some information, contact us.
